An introduction

This blog is dedicated to the memory of Phyllis Devine and The Alternate: A Chronicle of 20th Century Motor Racing which she published for many years as a service to the racing history community. Ms. Devine’s little monthly magazine featured racing history articles written by readers, and always provided unique perspectives on the history of our sport.  This new blog has been created to feature articles written by you, the readers, following Phyllis Devine’s rule - “write what you know.” Ms. Devine encouraged many amateur writers through the years, including yours truly, and editing this blog is my way of giving back.

This blog will allow us to share stories and memories of racing history from the people that lived through it, or have researched it, so important history can reach a wider audience. Please consider this as my invitation to submit racing history articles, photographs, and videos that you want to share with the world. This blog will be what you the readers make it.

Please submit your articles via the email link under the 'about me" tab.

In the immortal words of my racing history mentor and friend Don Radbruch "thanks troops."

  1. A great idea, I can't wait to read it. Maybe I can even come up with some articles for you. Is it limited to just open wheel racing?

  3. Tim; Phyllis Devine's magazine stuck close to American open wheel racing, but I am willing to entertain articles on any kind of US racing

  4. Hi Kevin. Of course I think this is a great idea. I will support it anyway I can. I write daily about auto racing history at www.firstsuperspeedway.com. I am particularly fascinated with pre-World War I American auto racing. As former VP of marketing & public relations at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway I also have a huge interest in how the history of the sport speaks to the current brand and its value in the minds of consumers. I wish you the very best with your efforts.
